ABOUT US

We are The Cooking Company and we have been successfully running Bristol's popular Folk House Café for many years, more recently adding Spike Island Café and Bowl of Plenty at Colston Hall to the family.  Day to day all cafés have become renowned for their imaginative use of organic, locally sourced ingredients to produce delicious lunches, evening meals and bar snacks.

We provide catering in-house at the Bristol Folk House, Spike Island and Colston Hall, all of whom have a variety of room and venue hire options, and off-site at venues such as St. Georges Bristol, North Cadbury Court, plus large and small corporate events, staff parties and private dinners.

We are very proud to hold this award for both Folk House Café and Spike Island Café, and hope to achieve the same very soon for Bowl of Plenty!

We walk our talk and are very proud of the fact that both Folk House Café and Spike Island Café have both achieved 3 stars on the Soil Association ‘OSH’ initiative meaning that 50-75% of the food we serve is made from organic ingredients. We feel certain that Bowl of Plenty at Colston Hall will join them soon.

We are also delighted to say that Spike Island Café won Bronze in Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards for Best Café and Tea Room, and the Folk House Café is a finalist in the Bristol Life magazine awards for Best Café for 2018. Bowl of Plenty as the little sister is running to catch up but we know it wont be long!

Bevis Watts (CEO of Triodos Bank) in Bristol 247 “This is absolutely my favourite place to have lunch. The Folk House Cafe on Park Street serves up brilliant organic food served with love by friendly faces, with a good dash of creative arts and community spirit. Not only that, they’re a Triodos customer and a five-minute walk from my desk.”

International Women's Day 2019 #BalanceforBetter

It’s International Women’s Day and we thought we would celebrate this by celebrating some of the amazing women who work for the Cooking Company. This is Anna. Anna manages our new cafe, Bowl of Plenty (website not finished yet so Anna takes pride of place here on the mothership’s website), at Colston Hall (did you know you can book Colston hall for pretty much any event you can think of?). She also manages all our catering enquiries, and organises events while building up a very new, budding business so is a very busy woman. Anna hails recently from London and brings great experience, warmth and an analytical mind; she is also a dab hand at decorating bowls (you can still book to decorate your own!).

Role with the Cooking Company:

General Manager of the newly opened Bowl of Plenty at Colston Hall & Events Manager for external catering events for The Cooking Company.

How many people are managed by you?

What does an average day at work look like?

Set the cafe up to look its best, serving customers throughout the day, managing the social media accounts, planning business development opportunities (like the hugely successful ‘decorate your own bowl’ half term event!), organising in-house events and responding to catering enquiries.

What would you like to see happen in the world in the next year?

I would like the big corporations to start taking responsibility for their impact on the planet, firstly by paying their fair share of taxes and secondly to lead from the front with innovative eco-ideas, with a huge focus on getting rid of single use plastics altogether.

Who are you in another life (fiction or non-fiction)?

No idea. I sometimes joke that I was a Viking Warrior and I can't think of anything else so lets just go with that.

Who is your heroine?

I have so many inspiring female friends - that I would call my heroines but as for someone in the pubic eye, I applaud any woman who does what they've been told can't be done or who stand up for what they believe. I’m in awe of female explorers and love the recent story of 16-year-old Jade Hameister, the youngest person to ever pull off the 'Polar Hat Trick' visiting the North and South Pole on skis. After skiing to the South Pole, the Australian teen had a message for trolls who told her to 'make me a sandwich' she posted a pic with a sandwich saying, 'I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it'.  Go Girl!

What book are you currently reading?

Many Lives, Many Masters by Dr. Weiss - a true account of a psychiatrist's experience with a young woman facing many difficulties in her life. He 'accidentally' regresses her into past lives (although he does not believe in past lives at the time) and together they discover many important messages and lessons on an unexpected, intense and beautiful journey.

How does it feels to be a strong woman in the workplace, and particularly in this role?

In this current role, I am surrounded by strong, fascinating women (as well as some great men) so it feels great to be part of such an interesting and inspiring team of people. I have a lot of respect for Liz, the business owner, for sticking firmly to her morals for providing seasonal, local, organic, ethical food at affordable prices and putting these standards first, before profits. We currently have an all-female team of cafe managers and its great to work alongside some amazing women, in a supportive, encouraging environment.
